Stroke Program Outcomes

Temple University Hospital is one of only four designated Comprehensive Stroke Centers in the region, certified by The Joint Commission.

  • Temple cared for 579 stroke patients last year.
  • We intervened with clot-busting medication or intra-arterial clot retrieval devices for 15% of our ischemic stroke patients, surpassing the national average of 6-8%. Our complication rate was only 4%.
  • For patients who arrived within hours of their symptom onset, treatment resulted in improved functional independence measures.
  • For patients with brain aneurysms, we provided surgical clipping or intra-arterial coiling procedures to prevent strokes.
  • We performed 49 aneurysm treatment procedures, with a complication rate of 2%.
  • We performed carotid endarterectomy and carotid angioplasty procedures and stenting to prevent stroke by opening up blocked or narrowed arteries. We were able to perform these procedures with a complication rate of just 2.8%. 74% of the stroke patients who received these interventional procedures were able to return home or go to an acute rehabilitation facility.
